Michelle Lyons challenges all of our preconceived notions about elementary music teachers. Her stereotypical soft-spoken, lyrical, smooth voice is the perfect cover for the fiercest competitor in the room. We love that she comes to each class willing to try new things, attempt new weights, and accept any challenge (unless it’s yoga). Catalyst is often her warm up or second workout of the day, and we admire her running dedication (and pace!). Read on to find out more about Michelle’s favorite (kb) move, first job, and of course, signature song…
How long have you been at Catalyst and what keeps you coming back?
2 years; The change of programs each month keeps me coming back, especially the cardio like jump roping and run togethers…not so much the yoga… 😉
What’s your favorite strength move?
The good old two handed swing
What was your first job?
My first unofficial job was washing dishes at a bar and grill on Saturday nights, at age 11 (it was awful!), but my first official job was lifeguarding and teaching swim lessons at the age of 12 (yes, it may have been a bit illegal to be lifeguarding at this age, but I watched the baby pool for 3 years)! I worked at my hometown pool every summer for the next 11 years!!
Who was your favorite teacher in school and why?
Please don’t tell her this, but I have to say my mother. I had her as a teacher during my senior year in high school for AP English, and she made me work harder than any other teacher, but I learned valuable life lessons in the process.
What’s the longest you’ve gone without sleep (and why)?
I have no idea how long or why…it has to be over 24 hours, but less than 48…I love my sleep, so I try to get 8 hours a night!
What’s one goal you have for this year?
Run every day for a year! I don’t know the exact count, but I am now over 200 days in a row. I do know that I started on November 22, 2017. If I’m feeling ambitious, then I may extend my goal to December 31, 2018, so I can say I ran every day of 2018, but that’s an additional 40 days, so we’ll see when the time comes.
What’s your favorite way to spend free time?
Relaxing with my family and shopping for good bargains!
Do you like or dislike surprises? Why or why not?
Even though I’m someone who likes to be in control, good surprises are always something to like!
If you could share a meal with any 4 individuals, living or dead, who would they be?
My four grandparents (all now deceased), one of whom I’ve never met since he passed before I was born.
What song would you say best sums you up?
Rod Stewart’s Forever Young: I absolutely love my job teaching little ones on a daily basis, which keeps me young, yet able to inspire them “to be courageous and to be brave,” always viewing them “in my heart as forever young!”
