Meet Jean!

While Cara and I have a vision for Catalyst (you can check it out here), our members make that vision a reality. If you really want to know what we’re all about, ask the people who walk through our door 3, 4, 5, even 6 times a week. Enjoy a peek inside with our new Member Spotlight. Find out pivotal facts (like favorite strength moves and first cars) and get a better picture of what (or rather who) makes Catalyst Strength so strong!

First up, Jean Brenneman…

When we met Jean at our Holiday Survival Workshop last year, we knew she was good stuff. After testing the waters with our Jumpstart program, she opted for an unlimited membership and has been a staple at our 6:15am class ever since. We love the zeal she brings to all she does, from being a student of strength to trying new recipes, hosting parties, and travelling to fun places with a social calendar Cara and I envy.  We have determined we want to be like Jean when we grow up, or maybe more accurately when our kids grow up. Here she is in her own words:

How long have you been at Catalyst and what keeps you coming back?  Just over a year.  I keep coming back because of Steph and Cara (and Hudson and Amber and Anne and…everyone, including Mary and Monte, of course!)

What’s your favorite strength move?  Two-handed swings, which I love (as opposed to double bell swings, which I hate…)  I’m also enjoying a new move – the v-sit press.

IMG_6296How do you make it through an Iowa winter?  I host an annual Oscar Party.  Attendees are required to see all of the movies nominated for Best Picture.  Going to up to 10 m
month (from the date of nomination to the date of the Oscars) helps me get through some of the bleakest days of winter.ovies in just over a

What was your first car?  My dad bought me a 1972 brown Chevrolet Impala – it could hold at least 7 of my friends and me.  When it died, I wondered what he would buy for me next.  Can you believe it was a 1972 green Chevrolet Impala?!?

Would you rather meet your ancestors or your descendants?  My descendants  Why?  I’ve seen pictures of and heard stories about my ancestors.  I would love to see what characteristics of mine have carried down to my descendants.

Favorite food?  I love all kinds of food!  Learning about local specialties and the best places to get those local specialties is an important part of vacation planning for me.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? I took a bookkeeping class in high school and loved it.  Is that what you do now?  Yep – I’m the CFO (Chief Financial Officer) for the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation.

What’s one thing on your bucket list?  Traveling to France with my daughter, Anne, in 2019.  She will be there to see the FIFA Women’s World Cup.  I will be there to see the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the lavender fields in Provence.

And in honor of the recent inauguration…If you were ruler of your own country what would be the first law you would introduce?  I believe that everyone should have food, clothing, shelter….and healthcare.  If I could introduce a law that provided those things to everyone, I would feel I had accomplished a lot.

Quote to live by – Wake up. Kick ass. Be kind. Repeat.
